If you are deciding whether to import Australian camels, please carefully read the below dot point.
- There is only one reliable supplier of camels in Australia, this being the Ngaanyatjarra Camel Company and the Company Director is Mr Troy Coe, who is also Managing Director of Central Livestock Management. Troy is supported by Paul and Karen Ellis who assist with administration and training of camels during quarantine, veterinary inspections and checks, transportation and loading, as well as on flight support during International flights, and eventual handover of camels in their new location.
- In August 2012 the Board of The Ngaanyatjarra Council signed a joint venture with Central Livestock Management to form the Ngaanyatjarra Camel Company. The company’s role is to muster and sell camels.
- The Ngaanyatjarra Council Lands is home to the greatest population of camels found in Australia. The camels have roamed freely on the Ngaanyatjarra lands since the 1940's and the population has increased to approximately 300,000.
- The Ngaanyatjarra Camel Company employs up to 40 First Nation Traditional Owners and operates in an area covering approximately 3% of mainland Australia (250,000 km2), encompassing sections of the Gibson Desert, Great Sandy Desert, Great Victoria Desert, and all of the Central Ranges within Western Australia.
- Currently, due to Covid 19 access to the Ngaanyatjarra Council Lands is restricted and permits are required to enter the lands at all times
- The Ngaanyatjarra Camel Company does not export meat or slaughter animals, we only export breeding animals and only by air, NOT by sea
- The Ngaanyatjarra Camel Company is constantly improving its capacity to select camels for breeding animals and for their individual beauty. We have worked with the now King of Fujairah in the UAE supplying breeding camels. Karen Ellis has a particular interest in selecting and educating camels for export. She has attended and judged multiple competitions in the U.A.E and India.
- We quote only CIP and don’t quote FOB under the terms of our government license; we must guarantee control over the whole process to the port of destination.
- Sourcing camels in huge deserts is not a simple or cheap process, neither is the cost for trucking transportation from The Ngaanyatjarra Lands to an approved camel quarantine facility, followed by quarantine, veterinary, government, camel training, licensed export facilitator fees and the air frieght costings; please do not contact us assuming the Australian Government instigated camel culls will result in cheap camels, this is not the case.
- We can provide approximate quotations based on either per camel or total plane load, not by kilo which is for slaughter animals terms and we do not export camels for slaughter. We will require your full name and proof of legitimacy as well as a potential deposit payment in order to complete final quotations
- The Ngaanyatjarra Camel Company can only access dromedary camels as there are no Bactrian camels in Australia
- There are no specific isolated individual breeds of camels represented on The Ngaanyatjarra Lands or anywhere in Australia. What we have developed is a very robust disease free camel consisting of a mix of the original breeds which entered Australia in earnest from the 1860's onward
- We can’t assist you if you are requiring slaughter camels
- we don’t export slaughter camels, our supply chain is exclusively contracted for packed meat to one company in Australia
- We only export breeding camels by Air at this time . Sea is something we would only look at if we had a VERY clear indication of target price and minimum orders would have to be for 3000 camels or more. Without a clear indication of sea target price we are unable to provide a quote and wont proceed due to the time and money involved in doing so
- Please be aware the TV footage of camels from Australia in Tripoli, Libya were NOT Australian camels they were from Ethiopia. The Australian Government will not approve livestock export shipments where the port of landing comes under artillery fire and 3000 camels are run through the street. All livestock exports are approved by the Australian Government and require import permits from Internationally recognised countries.
- We don’t quote FOB only CIF/CIP and always organise our own freight bookings , it is a requirement of our export license by the Australian Government that the exporter control all aspects of the export shipment.
- Australian livestock exports can occur by sea and air and can only be undertaken by companies licensed by the Australian Government. Exports are conducted under strict regulations and companies are audited by the Government regularly. Sea journeys to the Middle East and beyond the Suez Canal require the shipment to be approved by the Government and to be monitored during the journey by government observers on board and even CCTV cameras. No camels have been exported by sea since 2014. The ship must be approved by AMSA (Australian Maritime Services Association) and for livestock transport of camels by DoAWE (Department of Agriculture Water and Environment) before the ship can depart.
- Journeys by air are the safest with animals safely housed in comfortable crates with temperatures monitored throughout the flight. All shipments have to be approved by the Australian Government. For all shipments by air handlers travel with the animals to assist in loading and unloading and monitor the animals well being during the flight.
- We presently only conduct breeding shipments by air, not by sea, however, if we were to consider sea export we would only do so only for a very serious inquiry where a clear target price is indicated. The cost of submitting an export application and license would be over $120,000.00 AUD. Only serious buyers would be responded to and only for breeding animals.
- The sourcing of Australian camels is a mighty task in itself requiring a helicopter, custom four wheel drives, suitable yards, well-trained staff, and working in remote landscapes covering an area of over 250,000 km2. Prior to export selection potentially hundreds of camels are mustered into a yard location, where they are inspected for export quality and weighed. Once the selection process has been completed the camels travel to an approved quarantine facility and their education for training can commence. Training is carried out concurrently with quarantine procedures and quarantine regulations vary according to country. Training is time consuming but essential for safe handling, veterinary checks, safe loading and unloading as well as a smooth handover to the new owners.
- We consider our facilities, staff, sourcing, training methods and supply chain to be the best in Australia.
